A few weeks ago, our first guest editors we planned to share the actions of their panel discussion on the theme: "The animal and the child be born and grow together-postural communication between the child and the dog - Zero risk does exist? . "We published the first chapter titled: Being born and Brighter . Here at last is the second chapter, it will be followed by three others that I try to publish more quickly!
As a reminder, this conference was organized by the City of Tarbes and Tarbais Kennel Club , and led by four veterinary behaviorists: Dr. Beatrice Laffite - Dr. Dominique LACHAPELE - Dr. Nicolas MASSAL - Dr. Lawrence ORDUNA, Dr. Christian FIALAIRE members of the association Zoopsy .

Chapter 2: Mature set: transition to adulthood
The child and the dog grew up together. Common experiences especially during the games helped build strong relationships. Everyone got to know each other, to respect it.
But at puberty, a lot can be questioned. Every parent knows, this period is the necessary step of assertiveness, sometimes rebellion.
Puberty the dog or the child of puberty cause changes in the balance between the child and the dog, much to prepare.
Puberty: definitions
Puberty is a stage of human development marking the transition from childhood to adolescence (fertility). She noted in particular by rapid growth due to growth hormones and the development of primary sexual characteristics and secondary sex hormones, with notable behavioral changes including an increased need for sleep related to a shift of melatonin release.
This step also exists in the canine species, with the same physiological and behavioral changes.
The age of onset of puberty depends mainly on the adult size of the breed: 6 months in miniature breeds to 18 months in giant breeds. It is the male to produce the first fertilizing sperm. The first heats of the females are often discrete. One needs to distinguish between bitches puberty (ability to ovulate) and womanhood (ability to complete gestation and parturition).
Puberty the dog
Puberty with its metamorphosis is a new hormone sensitive period. The puppy entered adolescence must undergo an initiation, consists of two basic elements:
- The detachment of adolescent males with the mother and other adults. Ie the acquisition of autonomy. Teenagers can wait until the second heat. Secondment to the mother or the adult attachment allows attachment to the group and avoid the anxiety associated with separation.
- Prioritization: This is the entry in the hierarchy of adults with compliance thereof and production of adequate communications. Any attempt to express sexuality, passage control, priority input is severely punished by adults. The only proper punishment is exclusion.
Puberty, change of status from puppy to adulthood, is an important, sometimes overlooked by teachers who are well invested during the socialization period and who believe that the gains are well established.
Hierarchy
The hierarchy is around access, control of a number of privileges: the privileges that have symbolic value. These powers are now well known and too often the only thing looked at in the relationship.
- Prerogatives food
- Control of Space
- Initiative Contacts
- Public Expression of sexuality
Dominance is not an intrinsic characteristic of an animal. The main role is to regulate the dominant interactions between group members that are subordinate. The dog can never control everything in the life of a family, this position can be very anxiety provoking for him and cause the appearance of attacks.

Unstable equilibrium
The hierarchy is not installed in a group so immutable. Any change in the group or its environment may cause changes in the hierarchical balance. A change of territory (moving), a modification of the group (birth, starting new family member), but also the change of sexual status (transition to puberty the dog, the child), and physical capabilities ( disease, aging).
Destabilization of a group that was structured by a hierarchy calming can lead to more conflict.
Special relationship
The hierarchy is certainly a balancing factor in a family with an important communication.
But fortunately this is not the only thing that unites its members, human and canine. Cooperation is present, especially among working dogs for disabled children.
Complicity linked to the disease is very important between the dog and the child, a true confidant.
Conclusion
To grow old together, we must live peacefully together:
It is essential that in a family or a place set for each, and each remains in its place, including the dog.
- Clear rules must be established, known and respected by all.
- Communication between humans and dogs should not be ambiguous.
- Parents are responsible to protect and love their children and their animals is their role, their duty as adults.
