My wife is a fan of David Lodge. She has already eaten (I have not yet done) the last book of our favorite university "Life muted" (Ed Zone Books). She pointed out the passage where our mischievous linguist, recently retired and became hard of hearing, participates in a group of patients. In this context a young deaf exposes the help given by his dog educated.
I discovered the practice of dogs for the deaf in 1995 when I organized a conference in Clermont-Ferrand "Assistance to disability and therapy by the Animal Facility." On this occasion, the association "dog listener", we learned sadly his untimely end due to lack of sustainable funding. In this context the association did not make any oral or sent us the following abstract form. I hope the new publication of this text "historic" breathes new life in France, this approach worthy of great interest.
DOG EAR
In France 7% of the population has a hearing loss. This forms a group of 3 000 000 300 000 hearing impaired and profoundly deaf who is faced with loneliness and social isolation. These people are not only out of conversations and music but also of ambient noise alarms, ringtones, calls. . .
What is a dog listener?
The dog is a dog listener specially educated to inform his master of the occurrence of particular noises and meaningful and to take him to the source of these sounds. A dog gives good results in a new autonomy deaf to his master: he lends his ear and prevents the chime of the door, the alarm clock ringing, the oven timer and many other sounds. . . This dog is a loving companion at all times reassuring and facilitates meetings with his presence.
How is a dog trained listener?
The future "dog listener" is chosen very young in private homes or in the SPA. He was selected for its attention to noise, pleasant and balanced character. It is then placed in a foster family who will (under the guidance of the association) to teach him the basics of "savoir vivre": cleanliness, walking on a leash, contact with children and other animals. . . . After this period the animal is taken by the association "Dog Ear" begins where the specialization phase: reaction to sounds and alert the master.
Who is entitled to a dog listener?
Any person may apply for a dog listener provided they present a severe hearing loss, profound or total and loving dogs. The future master shows his preference for the size of the dog and it sounds to which he refers to his future love that dog reacts.
How can you help the association "dog listener"?
The association "dog listener" is nonprofit. The dog is given free to the deaf person. . . . .

Hello,
I am a girl of 23 years and who, because of illness, becomes deaf. After an operation I heard again but it will not last. I would like to know if there is training to become a dog trainer headset (guide dogs for the hearing impaired).
I take my hearing for training dogs and share it with people being more affected than me.
Sincerely,
Soizic.

Hello Peter and Soizic,
meet both your questions: Is there currently an association or body of training hearing dogs? And how to contact, work with them and especially enjoy a dog listener?
As I said in the note on this subject, I do not currently have such association in France. It exists in other countries (England, Sweden, Canada, Japan, China ...) as shown by a Google search I just did. In France there are people who position themselves in this niche, but I do not know. So there I think something to do on this side by identifying experiments in progress, even if they are quality. If this is not the case, and if your heart tells you, revive an association of dog trainers headphones! Either independently or in conjunction with the associations of current guide dogs to visually impaired or motor?
I am ready to help you in the best of my ability, in this sense.
Have a good trip and I especially hope that the dog listener will be reborn in France.

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year 2010!
I am looking for an education center, or an educator, or even just advice on how to raise a dog for "listening and warning."
I have a very serious hearing impairment that is growing every year ... This shows how the dog listener and warning me interested. And since I lost my last dog recently, I adopt a Labrador puppy in a week and "I intend to" educate.
Since Nadege is certainly not alone in wanting to move in this direction, it is essential that France reacts, ie us!
Veterinary, ENT doctors and general practitioners, associations of the deaf and / or hearing impaired ... it must inform, alert, "forced listening" ... the necessity of hearing dogs.
I too am ready to participate actively, then we start right away? by what in your opinion?
My email address is the name of my house (I restore old farm) in the Tarn, on 1ha of land not fenced in the countryside. Everything is still possible ...: salmets AT aol.com
See you soon, I hope.

Hello,
I am deaf and implanted; I live alone and I have a dog I tried to educate a little dog listener!
I have also studied dog (without being an educator, I'm doing not too bad)
My dog is a labrador cross, very reactive to noise, but alone it is difficult for me to get some behavior ...
To alert the doorbell or intercom, someone knock at the door, it works almost every time ...
I have not tried for the alarm (easy to do when the alarm rings, the dog picks up a treat!).
By cons, it would be desirable for my dog to guide me to the person who called my name (Iréalisable alone!)
It is also useful for the dog to alert in the presence of danger (siren, smoke or fire for example!)
I just gave up hope of finding an association that éduquerait dogs ...
I think that the fundamental problem in France, is the dispersion energy with respect to the deaf, in a myriad of small local associations.
The best solution would be to unite all wills well beyond divisions by type of deafness and cultures.
Would it be possible one day? ...
Sincerely

Hi all,
Not been here since the beginning of the year (very laborious connection in my campaign not covered by broadband) ... I see that we are more likely to motivate us.
From my recent research, there are also training schools in Belgium, not far away and more convenient for those who do not speak English (and I do not think our dogs are interested in language Shakespeare)!
Still nothing in France, but I am aware of an association which is mounted in the Tarn and Garonne. That seems a bit stalled, but it is for us to advance the shimililimiliblick ...
The president of the association is named Christelle, Planet of the site is deaf or something like that.
I will try to find this info.
If you want to reach me, my email address is listed above.
Been good to you and your dogs, headphones or not ...
Christine
